Fire Cupping
An ancient treatment technique. Remarkable results.
Fire Cupping is one of the oldest and most visually striking therapeutic techniques in the world, with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine that stretch back thousands of years. Despite its ancient origins, it remains one of the most effective hands-on treatments available today - and is increasingly recognised in modern clinical practice for its impressive results with both acute and chronic conditions.
At Mountain Sports Therapy, Fire Cupping is offered by Elliot as a standalone treatment or as a powerful tool that complements Sports Therapy approaches and rehabilitation programmes. Whether you are an elite athlete or someone who has been managing persistent pain for years, Fire Cupping may offer the kind of relief that other treatments simply haven't been able to provide.
How does Fire Cupping work?
Fire Cupping uses a flame to create a vacuum inside glass cups, which are then placed directly onto the skin. The heat removes the oxygen from inside the cup which creates a vacuum, and as it cools, the resulting suction draws the skin and underlying soft tissues upward into the cup. This decompressive effect is the opposite of traditional massage - rather than pushing down into the tissue, cupping lifts and separates the layers of fascia, muscle and connective tissues, creating space that encourages blood flow, reduces tension, and stimulates the body's natural healing response.
Cups may be left in a static position on specific areas of tension or restriction, or moved across the skin in what is known as gliding cupping - a technique that combines the benefits of deep tissue massage with the decompressive effect of suction. The approach used will always be tailored to your presentation and treatment goals.

What does Fire Cupping feel like?
Most people are surprised by how comfortable Fire Cupping actually is. The suction sensation is unusual at first - a pulling, lifting feeling on the skin - but the vast majority of clients find it deeply relaxing rather than painful. Some areas of significant tension or restriction may feel more intense initially, but this typically eases quickly as the tissue releases.
Fire Cupping can leave circular marks on the skin - often described as bruises, but they are not bruises in the traditional sense. They are caused by blood being drawn to the surface of the tissue, and are completely normal, often painless to touch, and typically fade within a few days. The more significant the marks, the more stagnation, toxins and restrictions were present in that tissue, which is often directly correlated with where a client has been experiencing the most discomfort. More significant marks may take longer to dissipate, depending on your skin type.

What conditions can Fire Cupping help with?
Fire Cupping is suitable for a wide range of conditions and presentations, including:
-
Chronic muscle tension and tightness - particularly through the back, shoulders, and neck
-
Restricted movement and joint stiffness
-
Myofascial pain and trigger point sensitivity
-
Acute sports injuries and overuse or repetitive strain injuries.
-
Sciatica and nerve-related pain
-
Post-exercise recovery and performance enhancement
-
Conditions that have not fully responded to conventional hands-on treatment alone
-
General stress and tension held in the body
Fire Cupping is particularly well suited to clients who have tried conventional massage or physiotherapy and have not experienced lasting relief. The decompressive nature of the technique works on layers of tissue and fascia that standard massage cannot reach, making it a highly effective option for stubborn or long-standing conditions.
Is Fire Cupping safe?
Yes, of course. We wouldn't do it, if it wasn't safe!
When performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner, Fire Cupping is a very safe treatment. Elliot holds a formal qualification in Traditional Chinese Medicine Fire Cupping Therapy and has extensive clinical experience using this technique across a broad range of client presentations. A full health history and consent process is completed before your first cupping session to ensure the treatment is appropriate for you.
There are a small number of contraindications - including active skin conditions at the treatment site, certain blood disorders, and pregnancy - which will be discussed during your initial consultation.

What can I expect from a Fire Cupping session?
Fire Cupping sessions at Mountain Sports Therapy are 60 minutes long and will always begin with a brief consultation to understand your current symptoms, health history, and treatment goals. Elliot will explain exactly what to expect before any cups are applied to your skin, and will check in with you regularly throughout the session to ensure you are comfortable with the level of suction being used.
Following your session, you may feel a sense of deep relaxation and lightness in the treated areas. It is common to feel mild fatigue or thirst afterwards - staying well hydrated before and after your session is always recommended. The benefits of cupping often continue to develop over the 24-48 hours following treatment as the body's healing response continues.
