What our Sports Therapy clients say...

Jenna (29, F) - Stockport

I wish there was an option to rate higher than 5 stars - Adam is truly the best in the business. I've suffered with sciatic nerve/chronic back pain for over 5 years and have tried everything from seeing multiple different physios, chiropractors and even a pain specialist who all had different ideas on what the problem was but ultimately told me that I was a lost cause and that unfortunately I just had to live with the pain. That was until I visited Mountain Sports Therapy.

Not only did Adam give me an actual explanation of the root cause for the first time, but within one session I had noticeable improvement and now, thanks to Adam, I feel like there's a light at the end of a very long tunnel.

I honestly can't recommend Mountain Sports Therapy enough. It's so refreshing find someone who is not only incredibly knowledgeable but actually cares and has a real love for what he does.

Sports Therapy Sessions

This is our main type of session where we can assess and support you if you are suffering from a pain, injury, or some sort of muscular dysfunction.  These sessions are 60 minutes long and will start with a thorough consultation where we will talk through the issue you have been experiencing, how long it's been bothering you and what sort of things make it feel better or worse.  We'll then move on to do some assessment of your range of motion in the associated joints, test the strength and activation properties in the associated muscles, and review your overall quality of movement for that area, assessing any associated pain or restrictions that you experience.

Depending on what the results are from consultation and assessment, we will then be able to makes suggestions on the next steps that we believe will help you start to address and overcome the issue.  This may include some hands-on treatment techniques that could directly benefit the associated tissues that are part of the issue.  It could also include some advice on reviewing and eliminating some of the habits from your daily life that could be contributing to this issue.  It will likely also include some guidance on some new movements or exercises that could help strengthen, lengthen (stretch) or mobilise the associated tissued that perhaps need a little more intentional activity to help your body repair and restore them.

Ultimately, we do our best to help you learn a little bit more about your body and how you can help yourself overcome the issue you are experiencing.  For the long term, you will be able to help yourself every day by eliminating factors that might be contributing to causing the issue, and adding in new movement and self-care habits that can help the body repair itself. The combination of these two elements is how you restore and maintain a healthy, pain-free existence.

When you leave the clinic at the end of your session, we will follow up to provide your rehab exercise programme via email, usually within 24 hours. It will then be up to you to start putting in the work to help yourself, based on the guidance we have provided.  This may mean doing some simple rehab movements every day for a few weeks, or making some adaptations to your regular exercise patterns and gym training routines.  We do our best to avoid asking you to stop doing the things you love doing, but if your sport or training is probably the biggest factor causing the issue you are suffering with, then you may need to take a step back or dial-down the intensity for a little while, to facilitate your recovery.

What sort of treatment techniques do you use?

There are lots of different hands-on treatments techniques that can compliment the rehab of an injury, to stimulate the body to repair dysfunctional tissue.

Massage is the treatment technique that most people expect to receive to address pain in muscles. We do a lot of massage in the clinic and it involves a number of different techniques to help the muscles and their associated joints.  You can learn more about our massage treatments here.

Other techniques utilised for injury treatments and pain management include:

  • Muscle energy techniques (MET's)

  • Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)

  • Trigger point therapy (TPT)

  • Myofascial release (MFR)

  • Deep transverse frictions (DTF's)

  • Peripheral joint mobilisations (PJM's)

  • Myofascial dry cupping (MFDC)

  • Dry needling (also known as medical acupuncture)

We are unlikely to use myofascial dry cupping or dry needling during your first visit.  We prefer to utilise hands-on techniques first as this gives us more opportunity to assess your muscles via palpation (touch) to get a better understanding of which muscles are part of the issue you are experiencing. We also need you to review an information and consent form before we use either of those treatment techniques, so we can send that to you via email if you are interested to try myofascial dry cupping or dry needling during your rehab journey.

How many Sports Therapy treatments will I need?

There is no definitive answer to this.  Ultimately, we are here to guide you through your journey of helping your body repair itself and restore pain-free functionality.  Whilst we can offer hands-on treatments during sessions to compliment your healing journey, the vast majority of the repair process is done whilst you are away from the clinic, during the day while you work and especially at night while you sleep.

We may suggest that you take advantage of our massage sessions and other therapy techniques like Myofascial Dry Cupping or Dry Needling through the journey of your recovery, but these treatments are designed to stimulate your body to repair itself rather than them offering a magic solution to fix the issue. It's everything else that you are doing during your daily and weekly routines that really matters the most, so the guidance we offer on those factors is often most valuable.

If you've been suffering with a pain or niggle that has been building up gradually, but you've been ignoring it for months or years until now where you just can't tolerate it any more, then it's quite unrealistic to expect a single 60 minute session to completely fix the problem.  One session may be enough for you to learn all that you need to know, but you then need to go away and make the changes to your own routines as advised, to really see and feel the improvements over time.

Realistically you should expect to do 3-5 sessions over a period of 2-3 months to address long standing issues that you've been managing. These sessions may include massage and other hands-on techniques to compliment your recovery, along with ongoing reassessments to ensure you are making progress and we are on the right path to overcoming the issue. Don't be discouraged if you do not make a drastic improvement in the week or two after your first session, we will always reassess and try different approaches to stimulating your body to repair itself, as there is no one perfect cure to solving a problem.  We've got to find the right ways to help you as an individual and sometimes that works via a process of elimination as we go on this rehab journey together.
