Dry Needling & Medical Acupuncture

Dry Needling, also known as Western Medical Acupuncture, is an evidence-based clinical treatment designed to target neuromuscular pain, deactivate stubborn muscle knots (trigger points), and restore normal movement patterns.

The term "dry" simply means the treatment does not involve injecting any substance or medication into the body. Instead, we use ultra-thin, single-use, solid-filament needles to penetrate the skin and target deeply buried trigger points that standard massage or manual therapy hands simply cannot reach.

How Does It Work? The Science of Neuro-Muscular Reset

While traditional acupuncture focuses on energetic pathways (Qi or Meridians), modern dry needling is grounded strictly in Western anatomy, neurology, and orthopaedic science. When a needle is precisely inserted into a hyper-irritable muscle knot, it triggers three main physiological reactions:

1. Deactivating the Local Twitch Response (LTR)
A trigger point is a microscopic patch of muscle fibers locked in a continuous, involuntary contraction. This constant spasm cuts off local oxygen supply, causing metabolic waste to build up and trigger pain. Inserting a needle into this exact epicenter causes a brief, involuntary reflex contraction called a Local Twitch Response. This twitch acts as a physical "reset button" for the muscle spindle, forcing the locked muscle fibers to relax instantly and allowing fresh, oxygenated blood to flood back into the tissue.

2. Neuro-Chemical Pain Block
The physical insertion of a needle creates a tiny, controlled "micro-trauma." This subtle stimulus alerts your central nervous system, prompting your brain to immediately release your body's natural, highly potent pain-relievers—namely endorphins and enkephalins. This response effectively blocks pain signals from travelling up the spinal cord, providing fast and significant systemic pain relief.

3. Chronic Pain Tissue Remodeling
For old, nagging injuries that seem stuck in a cycle of chronic stiffness, dry needling helps re-initiate the body's natural healing cascade. By stimulating localized blood flow and triggering a minor localised immune response, it brings fresh healing cells (fibroblasts) to the area to help repair, soften, and rebuild stubborn, dysfunctional tissue.

What Can It Help With?

Dry needling is exceptionally efficient for fast-tracking recovery from deep, structural issues, including:

  • Sciatica & Gluteal Deep Pain: Releasing the deep hip rotators compressing the sciatic nerve.

  • Chronic Tension Headaches: Targeting tight trigger points in the neck, traps, and upper back.

  • Lower Back Pain: Working on the muscles of the lower back, deep core and gluteal region that commonly get stuck in a state of tension.

  • Runner's Knee & Shin Splints: Easing hyper-tension in the quadriceps and calves that pulls on knee and ankle tendons.

  • Tennis / Golfer's Elbow: Releasing forearm muscle groups overstrained by repetitive gripping or mechanics.

  • Rotator Cuff & Shoulder Impingement: Restoring balanced movement patterns to the shoulder joint.

What to Expect During a Session

Your safety and comfort are our absolute priorities. The needles we use are incredibly fine, significantly thinner than a standard hollow needle used for a blood test or vaccination. Easy sterile needle is used only once.  If a needle is removed it is immediately disposed of in clinical waste and never reinserted into the body.

  • The Insertion: Most clients report feeling a tiny tap or scratch, or absolutely nothing as the needle passes through the skin.

  • The Sensation: As the needle reaches the deeper, targeted muscle knot, you may feel a dull, deep ache or a sudden, brief muscle twitch. This twitch can feel a little surprising, but it is entirely painless and is a highly positive sign that the needle is where we wanted it to be, in order to release the trigger point in the muscle.

  • The Duration: We typically leave the needles in place for 5 to 15 minutes, sometimes gently adjusting their position within the muscle to achieve the best results.

  • The Aftercare: You might feel a mild, workout-like muscle soreness in the treated area for 12 to 24 hours afterward, followed by a dramatic improvement in your overall mobility and pain levels. We provide detailed aftercare advice before you leave, to help you optimise the results of the treatment.

Dry Needling vs TCM Acupuncture: The Differences

Dry Needling / Medical Acupuncture

Primary Focus: Musculoskeletal anatomy, trigger points, nerves, and muscle tissue mechanics.

Assessment Method: Physical orthopedic testing, movement evaluation, and deep muscle palpation.

Needle Placement: Placed directly into tight, hyper-irritable bands of muscle to physically release them.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

Primary Focus: Balancing the body's energy pathways (Qi) and internal organ systems.

Assessment Method: Tongue examination, pulse diagnostics, and holistic symptom tracking.

Needle Placement: Placed along specific meridian lines across the body to alter energy flow.

If you have questions about whether Dry Needling is right for addressing your symptoms or condition, please get in touch via the contact details noted below.

We are happy to discuss your individual situation before you book.

We also offer Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture which takes a more holistic approach to helping the whole body repair and recover, not just focussing on muscles and trigger points.
