Client Testimonial

I recently booked the Core Strength Crash Course and was really impressed. Adam is super knowledgeable and was able to explain everything in a way that made sense to me.

I have been practicing core activation every day as recommended by Adam (as once you know how, it's simple to remember to do whilst waiting for the kettle to boil!) and have been finding it really useful in my yoga and Pilates practice.

After the session, Adam sent a personalised exercise programme with detailed explanations and videos which is incredibly useful and feels like a bargain to be included within the price of the course. Thoroughly recommend!

Core Strength Crash Courses

People often think that to have a strong 'core' you should be able to do 100 sit-ups or hold a plank for over two minutes. Whilst having strong core muscles will contribute to those feats, there is so much more to it than that.  If you've had persistent lower back pain, suffered from a hernia, generally feel weak around your trunk during daily activities, or just want to take your strength and functionality to the next level, then we are here to help.

Our core muscles contribute to the strength and stability throughout our trunk, to protect our lumbar spine (the space between our ribs and hips). The core muscles also produce the movements that we perform during everyday tasks and sporting activities. Therefore, it's important that we are able to use our core to resist external forces that could put our spine at risk of injury, as well as use our core to produce force to move our spine through all planes of motion, safely and effectively.

Ultimately, due to the world we have grown up in, our bodies have forgotten how and why to activate the core muscles as they were programmed by nature to do automatically.  This is probably due to the fact we've spent much of our life sat on chairs at desks, from the age of 5 when we started school, right through to adulthood where many of us have office-based jobs. When you're sat down, your body doesn't need to keep the core muscles activated to stabilise and support the spine, and so eventually your body forgets how to do it.

Here at Mountain Sports Therapy we can help you teach your body how to use your core muscles properly again, and train them to work automatically as they were designed to do. We break all of this down into super simple ways to understand how all of the different muscles work, how to activate them correctly and implement that muscle activation into your everyday activities and sporting pursuits, so that you can build a strong and stable core that is also functional with great mobility.

Our Core Strength Crash Courses are standalone sessions that provide an engaging and interactive tutorial on what the core muscles are, how to activate them, and how to incorporative core activation into your daily routines and workouts.  The course is available as a 1-1 session that lasts 60 minutes or 1-2 sessions that last 90 minutes, so you can attend with a friend, family member or your partner.

Level 1

Your first session will teach you all about the anatomy and how to activate and utilise what we call the 'Primary' Core muscles that are responsible for stabilising and protecting the spine in a neutral position.  We'll go through some simple movements and exercises that will help you notice what a difference it makes to your stability and balance when you activate these core muscles correctly.  You'll then get a personalised movement programme sent via email that will have exercises you can do at home or at the gym, depending on your current activity routines.

Then it's up to you to go away and start incorporating these activation techniques into your daily activities to get the long term benefits. It can take anywhere from 2-6 months for your body to start recognising that you are consistently activating these core muscles any time you move, walk or exercise, but eventually it will start activating these muscles a little more automatically and you won't have to think about it every single time you do something.

Level 2

Once you've mastered the ability to stabilise your core to protect your spine during activity, you can come back to attend Level 2 of the Core Strength Crash Course.  This is where we'll teach you to mobilise your core to maximise your ability to move your spine through all of its ranges of motion safely, effectively and confidently.  This session will explore the 'Secondary' Core muscles in more detail, as these are the muscles that create movement around the trunk of the body so we can bend our spine forwards, backwards, to the sides and rotate to the left or right.

Again, we will create a personalised movement programme for you, based on whether you have access to training equipment (at home or at the gym), or if body-weight based movements are better suited to you.  You'll then be able to go away and implement this training approach into your routines, and you'll never look back.
