Cranial Balancing & Stress Release
Stillness. Balance. Deep restoration.
Cranial Balancing is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that works with the craniosacral system - the subtle rhythmic movement of cerebrospinal fluid between the skull (cranium) and the base of the spine (sacrum). This system plays a fundamental role in the health and function of the central nervous system, and disruptions or restrictions within it can contribute to a surprisingly wide range of physical and emotional symptoms.
At Mountain Sports Therapy, Cranial Balancing is offered by Elliot as a deeply restorative standalone treatment or as a complementary component of a broader holistic programme. It is one of the most profoundly relaxing treatment modalities available and is particularly valuable for clients whose symptoms have a significant stress, tension, or nervous system component.
How does Cranial Balancing work?
The craniosacral rhythm is a subtle, continuous movement - approximately six to twelve cycles per minute - produced by the fluctuation of cerebrospinal fluid as it is produced and reabsorbed within the closed hydraulic system of the skull and spine. This rhythm can be detected and worked with through very light touch at specific points on the head, sacrum, and spine.
Restrictions or imbalances in this system - caused by physical trauma, postural strain, injury, surgery, accumulated stress, or emotional tension - can impair the normal rhythmic movement and place the nervous system under sustained load. Cranial Balancing uses gentle, precise contact to encourage these restrictions to release, restoring the normal rhythm and allowing the nervous system to return to a state of ease and regulation.
The technique draws on principles from both craniosacral therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine, integrating Eastern concepts of energy balance and systemic health with the Western anatomical understanding of the nervous system and fascial continuity. Qi Gong principles - the cultivation and movement of vital energy through breath, stillness, and intentional touch - inform Elliot's approach to creating the therapeutic stillness within which the craniosacral system can release.

What does Cranial Balancing feel like?
Cranial Balancing is among the most gentle of all manual therapies. The touch used is extremely light - often described as the weight of a small coin - and yet the effects can be profound. Clients frequently report experiencing waves of warmth, tingling, a sense of deep heaviness or floating, emotional release, or a feeling of the body 'letting go' of tension it has been holding for a very long time.
It is entirely common to fall into a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state during a Cranial Balancing session. Many clients describe the experience as unlike anything they have felt in any previous treatment - a quality of rest and stillness that goes beyond physical relaxation into something that feels genuinely restorative at a deeper level.
What conditions can Cranial Balancing help with?
Cranial Balancing has a particularly wide range of application, especially for conditions with a stress, tension, or nervous system component:
-
Chronic headaches and migraines
-
Neck pain, jaw tension, and TMJ dysfunction
-
Chronic stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation
-
Fatigue and burnout
-
Poor sleep quality and insomnia
-
Post-concussion symptoms and head injuries
-
Vertigo and dizziness
-
Back and sacral pain with a postural or tension-related component
-
Emotional tension and trauma held in the body
-
Recovery from surgery or significant physical injury
-
General health maintenance and deep restoration
Cranial Balancing is suitable for virtually all ages and presentations, including those who find more active hands-on treatments too intense. Its gentleness makes it an excellent option for clients who are in an acute or sensitive phase of a condition, or who require a more restorative approach alongside more active rehabilitation work.

How many sessions will I need?
For acute conditions or those primarily driven by stress and tension, clients often notice a meaningful shift after one to two sessions. For deeper or more chronic patterns - particularly those with a significant history of physical trauma or sustained stress - a course of four to six sessions is typically recommended to achieve lasting change. Many clients choose to continue with monthly maintenance sessions to support their nervous system health and overall wellbeing.
